REBT - The power is in your mind.
Many of us become attached to the idea, that the reason we feel a certain emotion, is because of an experience we had.
However, we could have a different way of thinking about our experiences. And in this way, we could lessen our own anxiety. We could be more in control of how we respond to different situations.
It’s how we PERCEIVE the things that happen to us.
It’s our THOUGHTS that drive our emotions, and it’s our emotions that drive our actions or reactions. This can be a hard pill to swallow sometimes. The fact that WE cause many of the things that “happen” to us. Not ALWAYS, but a lot of the time.
We act or react based on how we feel. And through the way we choose to act, we bring about the very things we do not want!
An example could be as follows:
You are feeling pretty crap right now because your terrible boss fired you, and now you are out of work. Woe is me. Why did this happen TO me? Life sucks…
Now, using this REBT line of thinking, let’s try to analyze what MAY have really happened.
Maybe you got angry because you were not given the promotion, or an increase in your salary. As a result, you no longer gave a shit about the quality or effort you put into your job. And next thing your boss was on your back, all fired up and angry, and you got fired.
So, because you THOUGHT your boss was a big shit for not giving you what you had hoped for, you got angry (emotion), and you turned in shoddy work (behaviour). And as a result you got fired (outcome).
Yes, it isn’t easy trying this REBT process the first few times, but with practice you will get the hang of it.
If we could learn how to think differently, we could learn how to control most of our emotions, and then we could be more aware of the behaviours we choose. And in this way we could stop choosing the behaviours that lead to the outcomes that we do not want.
